LS Army SD Booth at KomenOur first big event was a huge success!

The Komen San Diego Race for the Cure on Sun, Nov. 2nd turned-out nearly 13,000 people and raised $1.4 million dollars. So to say the least our booth was extremely busy. Luckily I had our volunteers take a picture when we set up but after that it was non-stop with people coming up to talk with us and ask for info.

  • I haven't the faintest idea how many people came up to the booth but we collected the names of 71 volunteers, handed out 80 survivor notebooks and over 160 bracelets along with loads of brochures and informational material. Our booth was set-up to display resources such as the notebooks, brochures and bracelets; we had the petition for individuals to sign-up for the local army as volunteers; a section was also set aside for Vote Yellow with a copy downloaded from the website of each presidential candidates' statement re:cancer.

It was an excellent opportunity for us to make contacts with various organizations in the community, ranging from support groups, cancer hospitals, teaching facilities and other cancer organizations. For example:

    • A Women's Wellness Center in Chula Vista would like us to do a presentation on what resources are available through LAF and bring them survivor notebooks (I have 300 left).
    • Scripps Clinic La Jolla is interested in more notebooks and information on LAF.
    • An RN instructor, is interested in more information on the public health sector programs and information he can use to train students in his nursing programs in cancer treatment.
    • A PhD psychologist at San Diego American Indian Health Center took a few notebooks and will get together with me for more. She is interested in more resources for the native american population cancer survivors in our area.
    • The Lung Cancer Alliance's co-chair in CA who works with advocacy and legislation, is interested in working with our group and also wants us to participate in their 1st annual walk this Spring.
